So, how do you get a 1080p image to fit on a 1440p display?

It is absolutely possible to downscale a 1440p monitor to a 1080p resolution.. Scalers built into your monitor and/or GPU will automatically adjust the image to fit your screen, and many video scalers do an excellent job of making the image look almost as good as it would on a screen with the same native resolution as your monitor and/or GPU.
Other video scalers, on the other hand, aren’t quite as sophisticated, so it’s worth investigating which ones are used by your hardware before making any changes to your settings.
